Vote for Bay of Fundy as one of world’s natural wonders

By Jane Stokes

Canada is on the shortlist and needs your vote.

The Bay of Fundy is in the running to be recognized as one of the planet's most head-spinning destinations as part of the "New 7 Wonders of Nature." Winners will be announced in November.

There are currently 28 sites on the finalist list, which started with 440 magnificent places in more than 220 countries. The final seven will be chosen by an estimated 1 billion votes worldwide over a two-year period-with the grand declaration planned on 11.11.11. Only the Bay of Fundy and the Grand Canyon are contenders for North America.

The Bay of Fundy, located between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, is renowned for the highest tides on the planet, at 16.2 metres or 53 feet. As much as 100 billion tonnes of seawater flow in and out of this narrow waterway twice daily - and that represents more water than the combined flow of all the world's freshwater rivers.

Fundy's extreme tides create a dynamic and diverse marine ecosystem. It is renowned for its coastal rock formations, extreme tidal effects (vertical, horizontal, rapids and bores) and for its sustainable coastal development.

The Bay of Fundy coastline is also a critical international feeding ground for migratory birds, as well as a vibrant habitat for rare and endangered whales, and is one of the world's most significant plant and animal fossil discovery regions.
