Editorial Notes

May and June are two of the loveliest months of the year. With the snow gone, the flowers blooming, and the days longer, a happier and chirpier mood is in the air. Especially after the snow storms we had in April this year, the month of May has never been so eagerly anticipated.

In May we celebrate a very important date – Mother’s Day. In honour of mothers in the city, Edmonton Woman gives you a dose of teenage philosophy on why we love our mothers and, for the fun of it, a list of terms for “mother” in various languages. Regardless of tongue, all mothers (and fathers) around the world are united by a heart of love that yearns for the good of their children.

For those with aging parents, there may come a time when you have to assume the role of mother to your own parents. We steal some tips on dealing with this from author Louise Lewis, who acted as a caregiver for her mother.

Our cover story profiles Carrie Doll, CTV Edmonton’s news anchor, who shares with us her joy as a new mother and the challenges of balancing career and family. Doll is one of the fortunate few who seem to have it all – endowed with an optimistic disposition, she delights in every minute of her working hours and rejoices in her supportive husband and the gift of their first child.

As the warm weather beckons, we help unveil a new calendar for you – this issue features ideas for summer activities, details about the 27th International Children’s Festival, golfing tips and health tips for dining out.

I heard someone say recently, “There’s only one and a half months before the days get shorter!” Sigh! May we all, like Carrie Doll, learn to see our glass as half full.
